When undocumented residents engage with the police, they face potentially life-altering consequences. If the police are called out for a dispute or issue, if the individuals involved are undocumented, they may be deported even if they are the victims of crime. Most typically in this state, ICE captures individuals this way: undocumented immigrants are barred from having a driver’s license in Oklahoma. It is very common for police to pull over a driver for a minor traffic violation and if they are unable to show a license, they are taken to jail rather than give then a ticket like they do to white people. There, ICE officers determine their immigration status. If it appears that the individual is undocumented, a hold will be put on them and they will be picked up and sent into deportation proceedings and relocated to a prison (likely private) until the determination on their case is made. Then, they are deported. This is before any determination of guilt for the original charge takes place. ICE apprehended 17,000 individuals in North Texas and Oklahoma in 2019.
